Axe throwing is essentially a Scandinavian event which is becoming popular in Britain, both as a competitive sport and as a recreational activity (highly therapeutic).
Although at first glance a very male orientated event ( very few men turn down the opportunity to have a go ) - it is highly accessible to women too with women's competitions held alongside men's at all major events.
Franz Ferdinand learning the finer points of axe throwing (click HERE to visit Franz Ferdinand's site) Axe throwing is surprisingly easy to pick up, with most people able to get the axe into a target within their first five to ten throws, but very difficult to become consistently good at. In competition you have five scoring throws at a target just under 4ft across. The target is marked with four 4" rings and a 4" bullseye with the outer ring scoring 1 point, the next 2 points and so on to the bullseye scoring 5 points. A maximum score of 25, attained by many in practice, is very difficult to achieve in competition due to the extra pressure involved. The sport is more about relaxation and rhythm than brute strength.
Saftey is paramount, safe distances must be maintained for spectators at all times. Blade covers must be used unless the axe is in use (new axes are razor sharp).
